Unlike any other program in the U.S.,the Institute for Building Careers provides positive alternatives. Since 1998, the IBC has provided afterschool academic, cultural, social, and service-learning activities for more than 4,000 youth in the greater Toledo area.
Your support makes our work possible. The IBC was formed to address the challenges faced by Toledo’s inner-city youth (poverty, low graduation rates, high crime, gangs, and drug/alcohol use). They come from troubled homes and attend failing schools. Some have been expelled. Many begin at IBC with failing grades, and are behind in core subjects.
The IBC works hand-in-hand with youth through dynamic programs that expose disenfranchised youth to new opportunities and hope for the future. We help youth learn to make positive, healthy choices and work vigorously to promote self-discipline and confidence in every young person at IBC.
We created The Learning Center in 2007 to provide afterschool and summer educational, physical, cultural, literacy, and service-learning activities for at-risk youth. The Center helps youth comply with our rule that they must maintain passing school grades to participate.
We expanded the Center in 2010 to create a Vocational Training Center to help youth develop employable skills in the trades. Together, these complementary programs form the core of our services and provide the greatest social return on investment for our donors and grant makers.
If you are able, please give to the IBC today or host a Chicks for Charity event. Thank you for considering supporting the IBC. Your gift will go far in helping Toledo’s central-city youth become healthy, productive adults who contribute positively to our local community.
Thank you.

I would like to announce two of our students recently graduated from high school. Steve Martinez graduated as a Honor Roll student from Clay High School. Jeff Michalak graduated from Life Skills. Jeff received the Outstanding Achievement Award and he received a scholarship from Owens Community College. I am very proud of them. – Coach Harry Cummins
